It can hurt your cat's throat. I was told that about 20 years ago from a
local veterinarian. But the effects had never been obvious. Recently, I met
someone who had no idea and apparently didn't much care why their cat could
not meow... "It just happened, the vet says she's healthy ". Probably the
same vet who declawed it. It's inability to meow was probably caused by them
feeding it hard food only.
I leave hard food out for mine to snack on, plus wet meals. One of my cats
was eating more dry food than the others and its voice changed. I immediately
suspected the dry food and started feeding it wet food only. I think it's
voice has changed back, but in any case surely that was the problem (I'll
post a follow-up later).
Now I've seen/heard it with my own 2 eyes. If you feed any dry food, pay
attention to the sound of their meow. Probably depends on several factors
like the cat and the specific dry food, and possibly other things.
Good luck!

I realize posting about a sensitive issue might attract the attention of
hateful trolls like "reilloc" and "Peter W". But it's precisely on topic and
IMO very important information.
