Frodo 7 Jun 1997 - 4 Aug 2012
My cat Frodo died yesterday after a long illness.
He was my friend.
Fifteen years ago his mother had a litter of four in my back shed. At the
time, I'd never had a pet, and really didn't want
any responsibility (although I started feeding momcat). A neighbor who's
into cat rescue got two of them adopted. The
other two stayed with me, and I eventually brought them inside and got
momcat spayed.
Momcat was feral - I never touched her, but I kept feeding her for the next
ten years until she disappeared one day. Sam
and Frodo became the center of my life.
Three years ago, Frodo had a crisis (lethargic, wouldn't eat.) The
Emergency Vet clinic kept him for three days, but
couldn't find anything wrong with him, so I took him home to say goodby.
The next day, Frodo started drinking, and the
following day began eating - the crisis was over.
Nine months ago, Frodo started losing weight and vomiting. The Vet couldn't
find anything wrong with him. He kept
losing weight. Another Vet said he had a bit of a kidney deficiency, but
not kidney failure. He began administering
subcutaneous fluids once a week, but it didn't seem to help. His weight
loss became alarming - near the end, he weighed
less than half his normal weight.
Last week, Frodo became very weak - he couldn't jump onto the counter where
their food and water was, so I put them on
the floor (he was still eating).
On Thursday he began to have trouble even walking, and on Friday he stopped
eating or drinking. It was pretty obvious
that this was the end.
I buried him in my backyard yesterday, and planted hibiscus bushes on
either side of the grave.
I'm an old man, retired, and having a bit of a hard time dealing with his
passing - he was my first pet, and had become the
center of my life. His brother Sam is healthy, and hugging him helps, but I
miss Frodo very much.
He was my friend.

I am with you, sir.

I have pictures. They're of my not-Sam and my not-Frodo who are gone. I
wanted to tell somebody but there was nobody who'd notice.

Saddened by your losses, I wish you well.
